We live in a simple timber frame kampung house at Ngapuh Homestead. It was built from a large tree that fell naturally here during a storm many years ago. The timber was left to rot but we salvaged what the land offered and carried and cut it by hand.
The house sits lightly on stilts so rainwater can pass beneath. The metal roof is traditional durable and well suited to the rainforest.
True sustainability is quiet local and repairable. Materials that have lived and will regrow. Where that tree once fell new trees will rise again within our lifetime. None of this would have been possible without community and those who supported us along the way.
The build journey has been full of unknowns and risk. Along the way I realised this design and building experience could be shared to help others with their own projects.
It allows people to start from a strong foundation, using a structural frame that is proven and tested, yet adaptable to different finishes needs and budgets.
